Planning effective social-emotional learning (SEL) small groups requires more than choosing activities. School psychologists must align group goals with student needs, select developmentally appropriate skills, and document progress in a clear, defensible way. Without a structured system, small-group planning can quickly become inconsistent or difficult to maintain.
To support this work, we created a free SEL Planning Template designed specifically for school psychologists working in school-based settings. This printable resource helps organize the full planning process, from identifying student needs to tracking outcomes over time.
The template begins with guided reflection questions that encourage intentional decision-making. These prompts help clarify referral concerns, data sources used to justify the group, anticipated barriers to skill use, and plans for skill generalization beyond the group setting. This upfront planning supports ethical, data-informed practice and is especially helpful for Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions.
